Friendly is Andrew Kornweibel, a breaks producer and DJ originally from Australia, now holding down the breaks scene in East London. With world class production, a keen eye for dancefloor sensibilities, and a penchant for naming his tracks after shady sexual references, Friendly is the new kid on the block party, and is quickly establishing himself as a major player in breaks.
Friendly works very closely with Fat! Records and Fat head Paul Arnold. HeтАЩs a resident at Chew the Fat! nights, recently gaining residency at The End nightclub in London, the first time breaks has been hosted in the main room. HeтАЩs also played at every shady dive and backroom in London, from the striped-shirt and тАШniceтАЩ shoes disaster that is Ministry of Sound, through to disused toilets in Shoreditch, at Cargo, The Key, the Bug Bar, Herbal, EC1, around the UK, Budapest, St Petersburg and back to Australia numerous times.
His single Fetish was released on TCR, undoubtedly one of the biggest and most respected breaks labels in the world. It fattened the airwaves and tore it up in clubs, with five star reviews in DJ Mag, and full support from leading breaks jocks and Annie Nightingale on BBC1. The single was the last to come off his тАЬTen Things You Need To Know About FriendlyтАЭ album, which was released on Fat! Records early 2004. The album garnered a string of cracking reviews from Q Mag, DJ Mag, IDJ, MixMag, Jockey Slut, and Friendly was hotly tipped as тАШone to watchтАЩ in 2004 in DJ Mag and IDJ. The previous singles off the album included 2Black2Gay, S&M and Glottal Stomp, all on Fat! Records, all of which gained support and plays from the likes of the Plump DJs, Freq Nasty, Meat Katie, Rennie Pilgrem, and Phil Hartnol from Orbital, through to Sasha and James Zabiela.
Just after releasing the album, Friendly was awarded Best Newcomer at the 2004 International Breakbeat Awards. Not bad for his third album. He was also nominated for Best Remix for 2Black2Gay, and Best Single for Glottal Stomp. Also featured on the album were bootlegs of LFO by LFO and On A Ragga Tip by SL2, both of which started their lives as illegal remixes, and gained approval and support from the labels and artists concerned. Friendly has also (legally) remixed the likes of Smithmonger, Simply Jeff (US), Flint, Toby Neal, Presser, and DeeklineтАЩs Booty Bouncer project.
His single The Bump and Grind has become a success of extraordinary proportions, being solidly smashed on National radio, arousing maximum euphoria on dance floors around the globe & provoking admiration from every corner of the industryтАж
тАШBump N Grind is the best track from Friendly so far, played it every set since I got it. EssentialтАЩ Rennie Pilgrem
Previously, in Australia, Friendly enjoyed massive success on his own label, and then on Zomba Records, being their first Australian signing ever. He was nominated for an ARIA Award (equivalent to the Brit Awards), and the singles were literally flogged on radio and music television. As a four piece live act, Friendly toured with the Big Day Out three years running, and headlined national tours. The album Akimbo entered the national charts at 22.
Recently, Friendly scooped the likes of Evil 9, Freq Nasty, James Zabilia and The Freestylers for a spot in the top ten breaks DJs as voted by fans on the Breakspoll website, going on to be nominated best DJ.
With the first Chew the FAT! Compilation CD released on 11th April 2005, followed by an international tour, Friendly continues to spread his love for breakbeat to an eager audience. With another artist album brewing, a string of splendid new bootys and a new track to be included on the forthcoming Sony Playstation game things couldnтАЩt be brighter for the affable one.
