Biography:
Mumonkan << JJJ "Unearthed" Winner for Melbourne, 22nd June 2001 >>
Great news for Mumonkan as they were announced as the winner of the JJJ "Unearthed" competition for Melbourne from over 2,000 entrants, and their track "ROCK POP STAR" (taken from the current EP release "ELECTRONIC DISOBEDIENCE" (out soon thru M.G.M. Distribution) is in it's TENTH WEEK, HIGH ROTATION on the J's. A download of "Rock Pop Star" is available below and you can check out pictures of the band from the "Unearthed" gig here.
Mumonkan ("Moo-mon-khan") are a Melbourne-based four-piece electronic band, pumping out an infectious groove to make you 'shake-your-rumpa'. Mumonkan have honed their live performance skills into a tight, fat, funky, danceable live-set of controlled mayhem. In June 2000, Mumonkan established their regular and now infamous breakbeat night, Mu, at Club UK, Melbourne. Organising and promoting the night themselves, the Mu breakbeat parties are drawing a packed house and line-ups down the street.
The current line up of Mumonkan debuted at Earthcore and Falls Festival 2000, and is: Tremayne Murphy (vocals and bagpipes); Mark Saul (sampler, keyboards and synths); Simon Rowley (vocals and electric/MIDI guitar); Shannon McQueen (electronic drum kit).
As audiences who have seen Mumonkan perform will attest, the band have an animated and dynamic stage presence. Tremayne raps, sings, plays bagpipes and also utilises infra-red sensory devices to translate body-movement into sonic expression. As well as electric guitar, Simon plays MIDI guitar that allows him to play synthesisers and access samples. Mark plays keyboards and master sampler, effectively remixing the tracks live. Shannon plays the Roland-V drums, triggering percussive sounds, samples and loops. With the expression and dynamics of a live drummer, this further adds to the excitement and visual impact of Mumonkan's live act.
Mumonkan is committed to the live-performance of electronic music as an accessible and stimulating experience by keeping a high standard of electronic sounds while maintaining a 'live-band' feel for the audience. The hard work has paid off, as Mumonkan's live combination of hip-hop, breakbeat, funk, rock and techno is quickly becoming an addictive musical experience.
If you haven't yet caught Mumonkan's live-show or heard their music, then try to imagine the Chemical Brothers and the Beastie Boys collaborating on a remix of Rage Against the Machine... and you'd be half-way there ;)
